Nearly 25,000 residences in south-east Queensland were left lacking electricity on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms passed over the region, generating wind gusts reaching 109 kilometers per hour.

Massive Ice Stones and Broad Destruction

Locals witnessed substantial frozen pellets measuring up to seven centimeters in certain regions. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that multiple regions across Queensland had been impacted by significant hail.

Emergency crews were working to restore electricity service throughout the impacted areas, with dozens of response units deployed to manage the extensive power failures.

Victoria's Storm Challenges

Meanwhile, approximately one thousand households in Victoria also experienced power outages after the metropolitan area experienced its heaviest rainfall in a year and a half.

State Emergency Services responded to over five hundred calls for help across the state, mostly for structural issues but also for downed trees and inundation.

• The Werribee area - saw significant weather impact
• Hoppers Crossing area - numerous assistance requests
• Wyndham - nearly 180 calls for assistance

At one point on Sunday, more than 28k electricity consumers in the state were without power.

Weather Forecast

Moist weather were predicted to continue along large portions of the state's eastern regions this week as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the coast.

Tuesday was forecast to be the most rainy day, with continued severe weather risk expected across multiple regions of both states.

Safety Concern

Health officials alerted that there was an higher risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the state's northern country region, particularly given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This alert comes after previous incidents where analogous circumstances led to substantial respiratory problems in the state.
